  U.S. Health Officials Warn Travelers of Chikungunya Outbreak in Southeast China U.S. health authorities are warning travelers about an outbreak of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne illness, in parts of southeast China. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the outbreak is centered in Guangdong Province, with most cases identified in the city of Foshan. Between July 20 and July 26, China’s National Health Commission recorded 2,940 new local cases, all of which were reported as mild with no severe illnesses or deaths. According to the CDC, people infected with chikungunya typically develop symptoms such as fever, joint pain, headaches, muscle pain, rashes, and joint swelling. These symptoms usually appear three to seven days after a bite from an infected mosquito. While most patients recover within a week, severe joint pain can persist for months or even years.
